Federal University Governing Council Birnin Kebbi has appointed Professor Muhammad Zaiyan-Umar as the university’s new vice-chancellor.

Zaiyan-Umar will succeed outgoing Vice-Chancellor Professor Bello Bala-Shehu, whose five-year term ends on 3 December.

Vice-Chancellor and Chair of the Council, Professor Funmi Togonu-Bickersteth, briefed journalists about the appointment after the 25th meeting in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.

“As you are aware, the Principal’s term will end on 3 December 2022.

“At its 25th meeting, which was held Monday to Thursday, the management board approved the appointment of Zaiyan-Umar as the new venture capitalist,” she said.

The vice-chancellor said the approval was a follow-up to an advertisement in the National Daily and subsequent interviews with the council.

Zaiyan-Umar is a former vice-chancellor of Sokoto State University and a professor of political science at Usmanu Danverdejo University in Sokoto.

He is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Center for Open and Distance Education at Sokotous Manu Danverdejo University.

Zaiyan-Umar has served several times as Acting Head of the Department of Political Science, Associate Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Dean of the Graduate School at UDUS.

He is also a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA from 1988 to 1999.
