Previous Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan believes he benefited from Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial penalty goal against Ghana in the 2022 World Cup Group H match at the 974 Stadium, PUNCH Sports Special reports.
Portugal won the frantic 3-2, with goals from Jao Felix and Raphael Leao after Andre Ayew canceled out Ronaldo’s opener from the spot.
Osman Buhari scored Ghana’s second with a late header, but the Portuguese secured a tight victory against a side that had given hope to the Africans.
Ji’an, who was a commentator for SuperSport TV during the game, said the free throws were soft.
“The penalty against me…I don’t agree with it, in my opinion, because it was just a gentle touch. Ronaldo, although a bit early, is not a touch that can be penalized. The referee should at least check. VAR and made the decision. For me, I thought it was too soft.”
The former Sunderland striker was not overtly disappointed with his compatriots’ performance and paid tribute to their never-say-die spirit against the Portuguese, while pointing to the way Ghana’s equalizer changed the face of the game moment.
“The change came too early. Although Dede Ayew scored the goal, he was obviously tired before that, but after the goal, he and the star Kudu were replaced. I disagree. But at the end of the day When the players came forward, I think the second half was the best we’ve seen so far in this competition,” Gian concluded.
The Black Stars are bottom of Group H and will look to rekindle their campaign when they face South Korea on Monday before facing Uruguay in their final group game on Friday 2 December.
