Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving Manchester United with immediate effect.

The decision came after a controversial interview in which the 37-year-old criticized the club and said he had “disrespect” manager Eric ten Hager.

Both parties said Ronaldo’s exit was “mutually consensual”.

“The club would like to thank him for his tremendous contribution during his two phases at Old Trafford,” a United statement said.

They wish “he and his family all the best for the future”, adding that “everyone at Manchester United will remain focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to achieve success on the pitch”.

United finished fifth in the Premier League in Ten Hag’s first season as manager, with the current season on hiatus for the World Cup in Qatar.

Ronaldo is with Portugal and will be captain for Thursday’s Group H opener against Ghana.

Speaking to the media in Qatar on Monday, he said he would “speak when he wants to” and that his row with Manchester United would not “shake” Portugal.

Ronaldo, who scored 145 goals in 346 appearances for United, leaves Juventus to rejoin the Old Trafford club in August 2021 – 11 years after he left for Real Madrid.

He has just over seven months remaining on his £500,000-a-week contract with United and his departure leaves him free to sign for another club when the January transfer window opens.

Ronaldo said in a statement: “Following a dialogue with Manchester United, we have mutually agreed to terminate the contract early.”

“I love Manchester United and I love the fans and that will never change. However, I feel it is time to seek a new challenge.

“I wish the team all the best for the remainder of the season and the future.”
