Some armed men suspected of being members of the cult engaged in a shootout with security personnel that lasted about an hour.
The incident is understood to have occurred late on Saturday at the Aguleri community in the East Anambra local government area of Anambra state.
Aguleri is the hometown of the state’s former governor, Chief Willie Obiano.
Armed men are said to have invaded the community and began shooting before police stormed the area, and the shootout continued.
The reason for the intrusion could not be determined, but sources in the area said the youths were heading to a police station in the community before being pushed back by officers.
While no one was killed, sources said some police officers and members of armed gangs were injured in the shooting.
According to police sources, at least 15 people have been arrested and detained so far.
State police spokesman Toochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident and said the situation was under control.
“The incident happened late on Saturday and the situation has been brought under control. Under the instruction of Police Commissioner CP Echeng Echeng, the deputy chief of the police station in charge of operations led police personnel to the scene and stopped these young people from attacking the police station.
“We have made some arrests and recovered some dangerous weapons. At the same time, other conflict resolution methods are in place to listen to aggrieved youth.
“We have also stepped up patrols in the area with the aim of enhancing peace and security, please. Further details will be communicated.”
