Gunmen reportedly again attacked and killed three policemen at a checkpoint in Agbani, the headquarters of the Nkanu West Local Government Area in Enugu state.
The incident is understood to have happened on Saturday morning near a railway crossing in the town of Agbani.
The attack came less than 12 hours Friday night after gunmen killed former Rural Development Commissioner Ozo Onuzulike and his brother Elvis in their hometown of Nkpokolo-Achi in the state’s Oji-River Council Area.
Although police have not yet confirmed the incident, sources told the newspaper that the gunman stormed a checkpoint near the Agbani police station around 8 a.m. and shot dead three officers at close range.
According to sources, the attack looked as if the gunmen had been somewhere to monitor their activities before the attack.
However, a local resident who witnessed the attack said: “The police were busy blackmailing the Okada rider when the gunmen suddenly attacked them, which caught them off guard.
“If you see what they’re doing here, you’re not going to sympathize with them. How can you be at a checkpoint in an area that has witnessed several attacks and you’re going to relax and collect money and give Okada riders change.
“Unfortunately, these criminals took the opportunity to attack them. They shot three people and the other three escaped with guns. The gangsters took their guns and took the Ugboka – Nara Unateze road and escaped.”
Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Command has yet to respond to the attack.
Also, attempts to get a response from Command spokesman Daniel Ndukwe were unsuccessful as calls were not answered.
However, Ndukwe said in a statement on the killing of former commissioner Onuzulike and his brother that the command had launched a hunt for the escaped criminals.
He said two of the gunmen were killed by joint security personnel as they tried to flee to Anambra state.
He said, “Initial reports indicate that two gunmen allegedly infiltrated Oji-River from the neighboring Anambra community late Friday evening, attacked and killed a Gabriel Onuzulike (identified as former Oji-River LGA President and Enugu) and his Brother in Nkpokolo-Achi, Oji-River LGA, was pinned down by a joint police/army team.
“The team quickly responded to distress calls regarding the incident and intercepted the Inyi community in the same LGA as the gunman fled towards Anambra.
“The team also recovered an AK-47 rifle and two fully loaded magazines, as well as a Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep belonging to the deceased victim; and a Toyota that the gunmen attempted to snatch from another victim. Camrys, RAV4 Jeeps they used in heinous criminal operations, and other criminal items.
“Meanwhile, the hunt for the attackers, many of whom were badly wounded in the ensuing shootout, fled into nearby forest due to the firepower superiority of the joint team. Further developments will be communicated. ”
MP Onuzulike, representing the Aninri/Awgu/Oji River federal constituency in the House of Representatives, contested and lost the recent People’s Democratic Party primary election.
He served the Ugwuanyi administration as a commissioner between 2015 and 2019. Prior to this, he equally served two terms as elected Chairman of Oji River Local Government Area Council.
