Some leaders of the Oyo People’s Democratic Party opposed Governor Seyi Makinde after declaring they would not support the party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

They spoke at an emergency meeting of leaders of the state’s 33 local government area parties in Ibadan on Wednesday.

They declared their support for Atiku, whom Makind and four other PDP governors were opposing.

Makind said on a live radio show Saturday that for some reason he and other victimized PDP governors will not work for the party’s presidential candidate.

The five governors have made no secret of their positions, vowing not to work for Atiku, except for the resignation of the PDP’s national chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, to allow Southerners to occupy the office.

One of the PDP leaders, former Mines and Steel Development Minister Dr Wole Oyelese, said Makinde was not speaking for the state’s party, but for himself.

He said the PDP leader will work for the party’s presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in 2023 and deliver to the country.

Oyeles said: “A good politician doesn’t talk like that. If Makinde says he won’t work for Atiku, it doesn’t make any sense. He’s a man! It’s an empty threat! If he says we shouldn’t Vote for Atiku, who will we vote for? In Oyo state, we are too sophisticated. Makind is new to Oyo state politics, but we will continue to work for our party.

“However, we are working for Atiku in a special way. My advice to any politician who wants to win in Oyo state is to become mainstream. The mainstream is party leadership in the state.

“What is the Yoruba position on this matter that Makind said? We have no position. Pa Fasoranti is talking about something and Baba Adebanjo is talking about another thing. We have no position in Yorubaland. Our members remain strong and committed. This is our party and we cannot let it fall apart.”

Another PDP leader, Femi Babalola, said the governor also committed a point he made about the PDP presidential candidate.

“People who pursue fairness have to be clean. As an engineer, I analyze problems. The first question I ask myself is is it good for northerners to replace northerners?

“Another question is, is it okay for an Ibadan to replace him from an Ibadan who spent eight years? So, with the benefit of such a Makind, why turn against another now? He doesn’t see any wrong, but when it’s Atiku, it’s wrong,” he added.

In response to reporters’ inquiries, Oyo Governor Tewo Adisa’s chief press secretary said Makind and other aggrieved governors never indicated they would run for any other presidential candidate.

He said: “Governor Makind and his colleagues, including Governors Nyesom Wike, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Samuel Ortom and Okezie Ikpeazu have consistently said that if the PDP system fails to do the necessary work in their state, they will focus their campaign on On the PDP candidates in their state. Question about the president of the state.

“They didn’t say they would run for any other candidate at the presidential level.”

Furthermore, in a separate interview with our reporter, Mr. Akeem Olatunji, PDP Publicity Minister of Oyo State, stated that Makinde never started running for another party’s candidate.

He said: “Governor Sey Makind has said in different forums that all PDP candidates will win in Oyo. What else would anyone want?

“Do we have any other party of presidential candidates from Alhaji Atiku Abubakar? There is no ambiguity except that some are just looking for attention. Most likely, they are trying to prank.

“All we know is that all of our candidates won in Oyo. Governor Sey Makind has never endorsed anyone else as his presidential candidate.”
