President Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retired) on Monday extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of India following reports that at least one British-era bridge in Morbi, Gujarat, collapsed on Sunday night. 141 people were killed.

In addition to those who died, 177 of the 500 people have been rescued, and the team is looking for several others who remain unaccounted for.

Buhari’s condolences are contained in a statement signed by Garba Shehu, his senior special assistant for media and advocacy.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, I would like to express my deep grief and sincere sympathy to the Prime Minister, the families of the deceased and the people of India, who have suffered from this tragic event,” the President said.

However, he prayed for the recovery of all those injured.
